About us

Still from Why UCL video

University College London (UCL)
is a diverse community with the freedom to challenge and think differently. With over 12,500 staff and more than 41,500 students from 150 countries, we pursue academic excellence, break boundaries and make a positive impact on real world problems.

We champion innovation, creativity and cross-disciplinary working in our teaching and research, and we are consistently ranked among the top 10 universities in the world.

Since our establishment in 1826, we’ve opened higher education to students from a wide range of backgrounds and have changed the way we create and share knowledge. The founding principles of academic excellence and research aimed at addressing real-world problems continue to inform its ethos to this day.

UCL is a welcoming, inclusive university situated at the heart of one of the world’s greatest cities. UCL’s central campus is spread across approximately three-square kilometres of central London.  We have ambitious future plans, with the opening of UCL East on the London Olympic site at Stratford, East London, affording a once-in-a-generation opportunity to form part of a wider Education and Cultural Quarter, backed by the government’s announcement of £141m in support of the UCL vision.

We have a proud heritage of disruptive thinking, a reputation for game-changing research and a unique multidisciplinary approach to problem solving.

Recent examples of our global impact include being at the forefront of work to secure a Covid-19 vaccine through Vax-Hub, a global consortium co-led by UCL and the University of Oxford, as well as developing 10,000 breathing aids deployed across 60 NHS hospitals to address a shortage of CPAP devices in UK hospitals at the height of the pandemic.

This, together with our ground-breaking work on the ESA Mars Rover, shows that even the sky is not the limit at UCL! UCL is an outstanding place to work. Our people are our greatest asset and in return we provide an empowering, values-based environment. We foster difference, mutual respect and collaboration, and actively encourage applications that will bring diverse experiences to the leadership of UCL.

At UCL we are working towards embedding and mainstreaming equality and inclusion as an integral part of the way UCL thinks and functions. We do this through better utilisation and more wide-spread, systemic sharing of data and insights and by building the infrastructure for more equality based decision-making, so that it is integrated into our planning, processes, and culture.

The voices of diverse staff and students are integral to this work. Last year we launched our 2020-2021 EDI strategic plan which outlines our goals and the proactive steps we as UCL are taking to ensure UCL is an inclusive and dynamic environment where everyone can thrive. We strongly encourage applications from women and those from a minority ethnic background  who are currently under-represented in order to bring more balanced diversity to our teams within ISD.

Looking to the future, UCL is working towards its long term goals with a new long-term strategy in development. The University’s vision is that its distinctive approach to research, education and innovation will further inspire its community of staff, students and partners to transform how the world is understood, how knowledge is created and shared, and the way that global problems are solved.

ISD Vision

About us

Our Information Services Division (ISD) is the primary provider of IT services to UCL.  We support and enhance learning, teaching, research and administrative processes by providing information- and technology-related services to over 50,000 staff and students of UCL and associated institutions.

Our ambition is to be the leading IT services group in the Higher Education sector and we are growing our team’s capability in experience/UX, agile development, security, cloud, service management and partnering. We are modernising our technology foundations, digitising the processes of the university to transform experience for students and staff, and partnering across the university to drive differentiation in UCL education and research.

We have fully adopted Agile as our delivery methodology, highlighting our focus on being adaptable, responding quickly to changing needs, and being focused on great outcomes for our users. For this reason we need people who have that same mindset and are comfortable working in an environment which focuses on iterative development with regular and rapid changes in focus to lead to more efficient project delivery.

"ISD’s Vision is to become the transformational digital partner for UCL.”
